FDA: Don’t Give The Dog A Bone, Ever

Giving your dog a bone — any bone —  is a dangerous practice that can cause serious injury to your pet, the Food and Drug Administration says.

It’s not like they’re recalling bones, but the agency has issued a warning in an article appearing on the FDA’s online Consumer Updates page.

However popular the idea may be that it’s natural for dogs to chew on bones, the tradition —  knick-knack paddy-whack aside — falls into the danger zone, in the FDA’s view.

“Some people think it’s safe to give dogs large bones, like those from a ham or a roast,” says Carmela Stamper, D.V.M., a veterinarian in the Center for Veterinary Medicine at the Food and Drug Administration. “Bones are unsafe no matter what their size. Giving your dog a bone may make your pet a candidate for a trip to your veterinarian’s office later, possible emergency surgery, or even

Rise Of The French Bulldog Continues

French bulldogs are now the most popular breed in New York and Los Angeles, and the fourth most popular nationwide, according to the American Kennel Club’s annual ranking of breed popularity.

This year’s national ranking show Frenchies climbing into the top five for the first time. Twenty years ago, the breed was 76th on the list.

And, no, we’re not burying the lede here.

Yes, Labrador retrievers have once again been proclaimed America’s most popular breed, but after 27 years in a row of that happening it hardly qualifies as news.

The French bulldog’s rise is a fresher, more significant and more worrisome development, perhaps highlighting the divide between dainty big city breeds and those good ol’ breeds we’ve long held dear.

The breed jumped two spots from number six to number four in 2017. In doing so, it knocked the beagle out of the top five for

Crate Training Benefits for Your Dog or Puppy

You probably know that dogs are the most desirable and popular pets. When you get a pet, whether it’s a dog or a cat, an unbreakable bond slowly but surely builds between you. But when you get a dog, you have a friend for life. When we train a dog, we usually all choose a sweet, little dog to whom we will give our full attention, as if it were a baby. This little hairy creature will completely depend on you and your role is to teach it everything – socialization with people and other animals, respect for some basic commands, but also to learn to defecate in a certain place. Yes, you need to arm yourself with love, but also with patience because this can take months. This can be a really demanding period if the dog stays in the house.

Dog owners try to teach their pets

The Homeless Man And His White Dog

For more than a decade, they were a familiar sight around downtown Salisbury, Maryland — the homeless man and his silky white dog.

You could often find them stationed outside Benedict the Florist, or located in what was an even shrewder spot to panhandle — behind the Dunkin Donuts, where cars lined up at the drive-through.

Elwood, the homeless man, and Gladys, his dog, weren’t shooed away too often in Salisbury. That, likely, was in part because of Elwood’s friendly demeanor, maybe in larger part because of his highly sociable dog, who he found as a pup in a box by a Dumpster, or in a bag in the middle of Highway 13, depending on who’s telling the story

In any event, the troubled man and the Wheaton mix became partners in homelessness, and for more than a decade survived off the kindness of friends and strangers in Salisbury.

Disney Resorts Lighten Up On Dog Policy

Despite their efforts to appeal to families, Walt Disney World theme parks and resorts have always been about as kind and welcoming to one family member, i.e. dogs, as the Evil Queen was to Snow White.

Signs are that is changing — a bit.

A Walt Disney World blog, WDW News Today, reports that some areas of some resort hotels will become pet friendly in October — the kind of friendly you pay $50 to $75 a night extra for.

Source: wdwnt.com

Walt Disney World started a pet friendly pilot program about a year ago. While that test program is ending, customer response has apparently been such that the resorts chain will designate pet friendly floors of certain hotels on a permanent basis.

The hotels (and their pet fees) will be:

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort; $50/night
Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort; $50/night
Disney’s Yacht Club Resort $75/night

Medical Glue to the Rescue: Correcting Abnormal Blood Vessels

colorized CT angiogram

An important part of AMC’s mission is creating new medical knowledge. Our veterinarians advance the care and treatment of companion animals by conducting innovative clinical research and publishing their results in veterinary journals. This blogpost highlights research by AMC’s Interventional Radiology Service and Surgery Department.

In prior blogposts about research publications from AMC clinicians, I highlighted one of our most common surgical procedures: the repair of torn cruciate ligaments. Another research-focused blogpost highlighted AMC’s Emergency Room Fast Track service and how it has inspired Fast Track services in other veterinary hospitals throughout the country. Today’s blogpost reports on an uncommon condition, arteriovenous anomalies, with a creative correction.

Normal Arteries and Veins

To understand an arteriovenous anomaly, you need to understand the normal blood vessel anatomy in dogs and cats. Arteries are under high pressure as they speed blood away from the heart, and veins are under lower pressure as they

Bringing Hope to Future Scientists! – Animal Aid

Posted on the 24th October 2022

Our first ever Future of Science student conference was a complete success!

We received great feedback from students, teachers and speakers alike!

Around a hundred A-level science students from five different schools joined us in Warrington, where they heard from a range of speakers with a variety of different science backgrounds. They were given a tour of the wonderful XCellR8’s vegan laboratory and a talk about the animal-free safety testing which takes place there!

We’re keen to give young people the chance to learn about the many human-relevant replacements for outdated animal tests – and to give them confidence that a career in science does not need to feature animal experiments. You can take a look at this short video which captures the day!

Bonfire Night – Songs to Soothe from Classic FM

Bonfire Night – Songs to Soothe from Classic FM – Animal Aid

Posted on the 26th October 2022

This Bonfire Night, please spare a thought for the animals and birds who may be terrified by the deafening crashes and blinding flashes.

You can minimise the impact by keeping cats and dogs indoors from the afternoon onwards and bringing rabbits and guinea pigs inside as well (or at least covering their home with a thick blanket to muffle the noise). Also, if you are having a bonfire, please check that hedgehogs and other wild animals have not made a home in your bonfire before you light it.

You will also be pleased to hear that Classic FM’s Pet Classics airs from 5pm to 9pm on Friday 4 November and Saturday 5 November 2022.

The shows will feature
