Suffolk police said the black bags contained the rotting carcasses of five beheaded chickens and two decapitated goats.

The shelter is asking for community members to once again give assistance to their overpopulation problem. During the month of August, the shelter held a “Clear the Shelters” event, wherein 63 cats and 47 dogs were adopted into new homes, but there are still too many animals within the shelter’s care.

These 50 animals and plants have disappeared from Minnesota

Vanishing North

An occasional series in the Star Tribune documenting the biodiversity crisis and the people struggling to head off extinction for Minnesota’s most vulnerable animals and plants.

Schoolchildren in Minnesota learn that bison once roamed the prairies and passenger pigeons darkened the skies. But gazelle-like pronghorns? Whooping cranes? Wolverines? A mussel called a fat pocketbook?

These too, are among the 50 species driven out of Minnesota since Europeans arrived in the state in the 1600s, according to a Star Tribune analysis of species data from the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Each loss leaves some tiny holes in complex ecosystems where everything has its own part to play. Every disappearance eliminates one small piece of the wild that we depend on to nourish our bodies and soul.

Humans were not the only primates to get lockdown blues, UK study finds | Animal behavior

Humans weren’t the only ones to develop bad habits during lockdown. According to new research, some primates in zoos became more solitary and sedentary, and others displayed more sexually and physically dominant behaviour.

The study compared the behavior of bonobos, chimpanzees, baboons and gorillas in a zoo and safari park in 2020, when they were hidden from the gaze of humans during lockdown, with how they behaved after visitors returned.

Olive baboons performed less sexual and dominance behavior when visitors came back than they had shown during lockdown, the researchers observed.

They also approached visitor cars more frequently than they had the ranger’s vehicle when the park was closed.

The study, published in the journal Animals, found that when visitors returned bonobos and gorillas spent less time alone and gorillas spent less time resting.

The chimpanzees that were studied at more and engaged more with their enclosures when the zoo

“That is the big question and the background for our study,” said biologist John Jackson. Jackson, along with his biological colleagues Christie Le Coeur from the University of Oslo and Owen Jones from the University of Southern Denmark, recently published a new study in the journal eLife.

John Jackson currently attends Oxford University but was at the University of Southern Denmark at the time of the study. Owen Jones is an associate professor at the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark.

That was a common sight for Lopez.

Lopez believes Schreiber had only been renting the home next door for about 6 months.
